Demand peaks in the European/Australian summer (Jul–Aug) and Indian winter break (Dec 20–Jan 5); shoulder season Apr–Jun and Sep is the best value-for-weather tradeoff.

Indonesia Etiquette

Do
Wear a sarong and sash (selendang) at every temple — pura provide rentals for IDR 10,000–25,000.
Step around the canang sari offerings on sidewalks and doorways; never kick or sit on them.
Greet with hands pressed at chest level and a soft 'Om Swastiastu' to elders and temple staff.
Use your right hand to give, receive and eat — the left hand is considered ritually unclean.
Drive slow on village roads during Galungan/Kuningan when penjor poles arch over the lanes.
Don't
Do not climb on or pose with shrine carvings, gates, or pelinggih.
Do not enter a temple if you are menstruating or have an open wound — locals will ask.
Do not touch anyone on the head, including a child — the head is considered sacred.
Do not point with your index finger or your foot — use the whole hand or thumb instead.

Sidemen Valley rice walks

The Ubud of 30 years ago — terraced valleys under Mount Agung with one main road and almost no scooters.
Tabanan-side regency east of Klungkung; the Telaga Waja river cuts a 1,200m valley between Mount Agung and Mount Lempuyang. Family-run weaving studios still produce songket and endek by hand.
Locals Say
Stay at Samanvaya or Subak Tabola Villa; walk the Sangkan Gunung loop at 06:30 before the heat builds.
East · 60 km from Denpasar away
Best: April–October mornings

Pura Lempuyang's seven temples

The famed 'Gates of Heaven' is just one of seven — the full pilgrimage takes a whole morning of stair-climbing.
Pura Penataran Agung Lempuyang sits at 1,175m on Mount Lempuyang's slopes. Local pilgrims climb past six smaller pura over ~1,700 steps to the summit temple — most tourists never go beyond the entrance.
Locals Say
Skip the queue for the photoshoot mirror trick; the real summit climb is the experience. Start at 05:00 with a guide.
East · 85 km from Denpasar (2.5h) away
Best: Pre-dawn to beat the photo-tour buses

Munduk waterfall trail

Twin waterfalls in the central highlands at 800m — clove and coffee plantations, cool air, no surf crowd.
Dutch-era coffee-trading village above Lake Tamblingan. The Munduk and Melanting waterfalls sit on a 3km looped jungle trail; the air drops to 18°C at night.
Locals Say
Pack a fleece. Eat the Balinese coffee-rubbed grilled chicken at Don Biyu — it's better than any south-coast version.
North · 70 km from Denpasar (2h) away
Best: May–September, mornings

Pemuteran coral garden

The world's largest Biorock coral reef restoration project — snorkel from the beach in calm shallow water.
Quiet north-coast village where 50+ coral-encrusted steel structures sit 4–8m offshore. Pioneered the Biorock electrolysis method in 2000; corals have grown back over 22 years.
Locals Say
Snorkel before 10:00 when the visibility is 15m+. Skip the boat trips — the best reef is wadeable.
Northwest · 145 km from Denpasar (4h) away
Best: April–October mornings
