Ironic Truth
Two peaks: winter ski season Dec–Feb and Indian summer-holiday June.
Unlike most Indian mountain stations, Gulmarg's primary peak is winter — Apharwat snow draws skiers from Dec to early March; June then adds a family-summer surge.

Gulmarg Ski Season opening week
Phase 1 gondola typically opens for skiers around 15 Dec, Phase 2 by Christmas. The week between is a soft-launch — fewer crowds, fresh snow, but lift queues during 10:00–13:00.
Phase 2 opening date confirmed only 7–10 days prior. Plan a Srinagar-only fallback in case of late snow.

Culture
India (Kashmir Valley) Etiquette
Do
Dress warmly even in May — Gulmarg sits at 2,650 m and temperatures drop to 4°C after sunset in summer.
Negotiate the price before mounting a pony or sledge; ask the union desk near the gondola for the official rate card.
Hire certified ski/snowboard instructors via the Gulmarg Ski School or J&K Tourism — they carry photo IDs.
Carry cash for the gondola (Phase 1 ₹990, Phase 2 ₹1,290 per adult in 2026) — card terminals fail at altitude.
Greet shopkeepers with 'Asalaam alaikum' — most Gulmarg workers are seasonal migrants from Tangmarg and Pattan.
Don't
Do not ski off-piste above Phase 2 without a certified guide — avalanche fatalities are recorded every winter.
Do not photograph army installations on the Khilanmarg trail or near the LoC viewpoint at Apharwat top.
Do not haggle with pony-wallahs after agreeing a rate — the union enforces fixed routes (Strawberry Valley, Khilanmarg, Children's Park).
Do not litter on the meadow — Gulmarg is a Biosphere Reserve and fines are enforced by the GDA.

Khilanmarg meadow trail
“A 1.5 hr uphill walk from the gondola base to the meadow where the entire Pir Panjal opens up — including Nanga Parbat on clear days.”
From the Gulmarg golf course start point, the trail climbs through pine forest to the 3,000 m Khilanmarg meadow. In May–June it carpets with primulas and buttercups; in winter it's a beginner ski piste.
Locals Say
“Start by 07:00 to be on the meadow before clouds build at 10:30. Pack water — there's no shop on the trail.”

St Mary's Church, Gulmarg
“A 1902 wooden Gothic chapel on the meadow — restored in 2003 and still used by the Catholic Diocese of Jammu.”
Commissioned by the Maharaja for British Residency officers, the church's pine shingle roof and grey limestone interior remain unchanged. Sunday Mass is held in summer.
Locals Say
“The caretaker opens the church on request between 09:00 and 16:00 — ask politely and tip ₹100. Pair with a short walk to Maharaja's Palace ruins.”

Strawberry Valley & Children's Park pony route
“A 2-hr pony loop through pine glades that locals call the 'pre-Bollywood' Gulmarg — the meadow before the chairlifts.”
Union pony route #2 passes Strawberry Valley (named for wild fraises de bois that fruit in late June) and ends at Children's Park, where the original gondola lower station stood until 1998.
Locals Say
“Officially ₹600 per pony for the loop in 2026 — confirm at the GDA desk first. Wear closed shoes; the trail muddies after May rain.”

Alpather Lake hike (above Apharwat)
“A glacial lake at 3,843 m that stays frozen until mid-July — reachable in a 4-hr trek from Phase 2.”
From the Apharwat gondola top station, a marked trail follows the ridge southwest to Alpather Lake, cradled in a cirque below Apharwat peak. Best done in late July when the ice cracks and the lake turns Prussian blue.
Locals Say
“Hire a registered J&K Mountaineering Association guide (₹2,000–3,000 / day). No mobile signal — leave plans with the hotel.”
