Ironic Truth
December–April is the only window where ferries, scuba and beach access all line up reliably.
Demand tracks ferry reliability more than weather — the moment Makruzz/Nautika start cancelling daily in mid-May, occupancy collapses.

Culture
India (Andaman & Nicobar Islands) Etiquette
Do
Carry photo ID for every ferry boarding — Makruzz, Nautika and Green Ocean all match the booking name to ID before letting you board.
Follow lifeguard flag rules at Radhanagar (Beach No. 7) — red flags are non-negotiable, especially in saltwater-crocodile sighting season.
Book scuba dives only with PADI/SSI 5-star operators (Barefoot Scuba, Dive India, Ocean Tribe) — they brief on local hazards properly.
Reef-safe sunscreen only inside Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park; chemical SPF damages the live coral.
Carry cash to Havelock — only 2 ATMs on the island, and both run dry by Friday in peak season.
Don't
Do not touch, stand on or feed coral — it's a criminal offence under the Wildlife Protection Act.
Do not swim alone at Beach No. 5 (Vijaynagar) at dusk or dawn — saltwater crocodile sightings documented since 2010.
Do not litter on beaches — single-use plastic ban is enforced with ₹500–5,000 spot fines.
Do not attempt to take coral, shells or sand off the island — bag checks at Havelock jetty.

Kalapathar Beach at sunrise
“Black volcanic rock and white sand meet at the eastern tip of Havelock — far emptier than Radhanagar.”
A 12 km drive from the jetty, Kalapathar is named for the dark slate-grey boulders strewn at the southern end. Faces east, so sunrise here is one of the few you can shoot without leaving Havelock for Neil.
Locals Say
“Arrive 05:15 for the 05:30 sunrise; the beach has zero shade, so be off it by 09:00. Two tea stalls open at 06:00 near the parking.”

Elephant Beach via forest trail (not boat)
“Skip the ₹1,200 boat ride — there's a 30-minute jungle trek that lands at the same snorkel reef.”
Most operators sell a speedboat ride from Govind Nagar to Elephant Beach. Far fewer mention the marked forest trail starting near Radhanagar that delivers you there for free in 30 minutes through padauk and gurjan rainforest — a quieter, leech-prone but greener arrival.
Locals Say
“Start the trail by 07:00 to beat the heat and the boat-loads of snorkellers (who land at 09:30). Closed-toe shoes mandatory; the path is muddy in any season.”

Sea-walking at North Bay (Helmet diving)
“Walk on the coral floor at 6 m wearing an air-fed helmet — no swimming skill needed.”
Operated under the Rajiv Gandhi Water Sports Complex license, sea walking puts you on the seabed for 15–20 minutes with continuous surface-fed air, surrounded by parrotfish and butterflyfish at North Bay's coral garden. Better than glass-bottom boats for non-swimmers and families with kids 12+.
Locals Say
“Book the 10:00 slot — the afternoon sea state at North Bay is choppier and visibility drops below 6 m. Combos with Ross Island make a full day from PB rather than Havelock.”

Govind Nagar (Beach No. 2) fishing village walk
“The Bengali settler village where every dive operator's morning kitchen runs — fresh fish at half restaurant prices.”
Walkable from the jetty, Govind Nagar is the working settlement of Havelock — fish auctions at 05:30, the Sunday haat (open-air market), and small home kitchens serving Andaman-style fish curry for ₹150 a plate. Most guests pass through it on a scooter without stopping.
Locals Say
“Sunday haat is the day to go — vegetable barges from PB land Sunday morning so produce is freshest. Carry small notes; nobody breaks ₹500.”
