Ironic Truth

December through March is the dry, comfortable Saigon window; Tet (late Jan / Feb) needs careful planning.

Saigon stays open year-round, but the May–Oct monsoon affects Mekong Delta extensions; Apr 30 / May 1 is a domestic travel surge.

Actually. Sell Saigon as a 2–3 night cultural anchor for Vietnam circuits, not a standalone destination. Mekong Delta day trips are best in Dec–Mar.

Culture

Vietnam Etiquette

Do
Remove shoes at temples, pagodas, and family homes — Saigon's Jade Emperor Pagoda has a shoe rack at the entrance.
Dress modestly at religious sites — shoulders and knees covered at Notre-Dame Cathedral, Cao Dai temples, and the War Remnants Museum's outdoor exhibits.
Greet shopkeepers and elders with both hands when handing over money or cards — it's standard southern courtesy.
Try cà phê sữa đá (iced coffee with condensed milk) — Saigon is its birthplace; Trung Nguyên on Đồng Khởi is a local institution.
Ask permission before photographing nuns, monks, or worshippers at the Mariamman Hindu Temple on Trương Định.
Don't
Do not photograph military bases, the Independence Palace gates from inside, or any soldier in uniform.
Do not flash large notes in District 1's tourist strips (Bùi Viện, Đồng Khởi) — pickpocket teams target obvious cash handlers.
Do not touch a child's head, even affectionately — same rule as Hanoi, the head is sacred.
Do not haggle aggressively at Bến Thành Market food stalls — it's polite to bargain at clothing/souvenir stalls only.
Do not wear shorts above the knee inside Cao Dai temples (Tay Ninh day trip) — rentals at the gate are limited.

Apartment Café Building, 42 Nguyễn Huệ

A nine-storey 1960s apartment block where every flat has been converted to a different café or boutique.
Built in 1968, the building was a US officer billet during the war. Today each former apartment is a tiny independent business — bookstores, vinyl cafés, vintage clothing — accessed by a creaky elevator that takes a 3,000 VND fee.
Locals Say
Skip the elevator queue at 11:00; the staircase is air-conditioned and you'll find Things Café on the 7th floor with the best view of Nguyễn Huệ walking street.
Central · 200 m from Saigon Opera House away
Best: 10:00–13:00 weekdays

Bún Mắm Lệ (175 Hai Bà Trưng, D3)

A 60-year-old family stall serving Saigon's most pungent and beloved Mekong fish-sauce noodle soup.
Bún mắm is a fermented-fish noodle dish from the Mekong Delta — Saigonese consider this stall the city's best. The 4-table shop has been run by the same family since 1965; the broth simmers from 04:00 daily.
Locals Say
Open 06:30–13:00 only. Order with extra chả lụa (pork sausage) and rau muống stems. Skip if you're sensitive to fermented fish — the smell is intentional.

Pho Binh (7 Lý Chính Thắng, D3)

An unassuming phở shop that was the secret Viet Cong command post during the 1968 Tet Offensive.
From the upstairs flat above this still-operating noodle joint, the VC F100 unit planned the attack on the US Embassy. A small free museum on the second floor shows the maps, radio gear, and bunker entrance hidden behind the kitchen.
Locals Say
Order pho tai (rare beef) downstairs first, then ask the owner Mr Ngô Văn Thắng for the upstairs museum — 20,000 VND donation. No English signs.

Tao Đàn Park morning bird show

From 06:00, hundreds of old Saigonese gather to hang their songbird cages from tree branches and let them sing in concert.
A century-old hobby — owners arrive at dawn with their lacquered cages of canaries, mynahs, and white-eyes, hanging them in clusters so the birds compete. Locals drink coffee on plastic stools and judge song quality.
Locals Say
Best on Sundays. Arrive by 06:15; the show winds down by 08:00. The cafe at the SE corner of the park (Cà Phê Vợt) serves 1950s-style cloth-filter coffee for 15,000 VND.
Central · 1 km west of Notre-Dame away
Best: Sundays 06:00–08:00
