Ironic Truth

Feb–Aug is Hoi An's window; Oct–Nov floods can submerge the old town and shut tailors.

Beach + cultural mix peaks Mar–Aug. The lantern festival on the 14th of each lunar month is a year-round draw.

Vietnam Etiquette

Do
Buy the Old Town entry ticket (120,000 VND / 5 sites) — it funds heritage maintenance and lets you enter the Japanese Covered Bridge, assembly halls, and old merchant houses.
Remove shoes before entering Tan Ky House, Phung Hung House, and the Fujian and Cantonese Assembly Halls.
Stop on the Japanese Covered Bridge for a moment of reflection — it's been a working bridge since 1593 and Hoi An's spiritual centre.
Tip your bespoke tailor 5–10% if the fitting goes smoothly; the relationship matters for the second-fitting turnaround.
Light a paper lotus lantern (10,000–20,000 VND) at the Thu Bon River on the 14th of each lunar month and release it during the Full Moon Lantern Festival.
Don't
Do not skip the Old Town ticket — guards check at the bridges and the fine is awkward to negotiate.
Do not climb on the wooden window grilles, antique altars, or merchant-house furniture for photos.
Do not haggle with cyclo drivers without agreeing the route and price in writing before stepping in.
Do not swim in the Thu Bon River — the current is deceptive and the water quality is poor.
Do not buy ivory carvings, sea-turtle products, or coral souvenirs — all illegal for Indian customs to import.
Tipping Guide
Tailor (full suit / áo dài)200,000–400,000 VND if fitting is on time

Tra Que herb village

A 3-hectare riverside herb farm where 200 families have grown coriander, mint, and basil with seaweed fertiliser for 400 years.
Just 3 km from the old town, the village supplies most of Hoi An's restaurants. Walk-in tours include hands-on watering (the old buffalo-yoke way) and a cooking class with what you harvest.
Locals Say
Cycle from Hoi An at 16:00 for golden-hour photos of farmers in conical hats. Tra Que Water Wheel cafe serves a 7-dish set lunch using only village herbs (180,000 VND).

Bánh Mì Phượng (2B Phan Châu Trinh)

The bánh mì shop Anthony Bourdain called 'a symphony in a sandwich' on No Reservations in 2009.
A 1989-opened streetside shop that uses house-baked baguettes, six pâtés, and a secret chili sauce. Bourdain's signed photo is still on the wall.
Locals Say
Open 06:30–22:00, queue forms by 11:00 in season. Order the 'special with everything' (25,000 VND) and skip the sit-down stools — eat walking the old town.

My Son sanctuary (UNESCO Cham ruins)

A 4th–13th century Hindu temple complex hidden in a jungle valley 40 km south-west of Hoi An.
The spiritual centre of the Champa kingdom — 70+ red-brick towers dedicated to Shiva, partially bombed during the Vietnam War. Survivors still show carved lingas and dancing Apsaras.
Locals Say
Arrive at 06:00 (opens 06:30) before tour buses. The Cham dance show at 09:30 is short but well-staged. Hire a local guide at the gate (200,000 VND) — signage is sparse.

Cu Lao Cham (Cham Islands) day trip

A protected marine reserve 18 km offshore with snorkelling, lobster lunch, and a freshwater village of 3,000 residents.
Speedboat from Cua Dai pier takes 25 min. Bai Chong and Bai Lang beaches have clear water and live coral; Hai Tang Pagoda holds a 200-year-old Chinese-style stupa.
Locals Say
Boats run Apr–Aug only (closed Sep–Mar due to monsoon). Book a small-group tour (300,000–450,000 VND incl. lunch) — bring water shoes, the beach pebbles are sharp.
18 km offshore · 25 min by speedboat away
Best: April – August
