Indonesia Etiquette

Do
Hire a licensed HPPGB Batur guide for the sunrise summit hike — solo climbing is banned and locals enforce it firmly.
Wear a sarong at Pura Ulun Danu Batur — the highland mother-temple is active and ceremonies happen most days.
Carry a fleece — Kintamani sits at 1,500m and sunrise temps drop to 10°C.
Respect the Trunyan Bali Aga villagers — they predate the Majapahit migration; ask before photographing the open-air cemetery.
Don't
Do not start the Batur summit hike without a guide — the HPPGB has the village monopoly and refuses solo climbers.
Do not haggle the guide fee — the IDR 600,000–700,000 / person rate is village-wide fixed; tip extra if happy.
Do not eat lunch at the Kintamani buffet restaurants on the rim — they are tour-bus traps; eat at warungs in Penelokan instead.

Toya Bungkah hot springs

Natural geothermal pools at Lake Batur's edge — perfect post-hike soak with the volcano in view.
Series of warm-water (38°C) pools facing the lake. Toya Devasya and Batur Natural Hot Spring are the two well-run resorts; day-pass IDR 150,000–300,000.
Locals Say
Time your soak for 08:30, immediately after the summit descent. The whole hike group descends together so the pools get busy from 09:30.

Pura Ulun Danu Batur (highland mother temple)

The second-most-sacred temple in Bali — relocated to the caldera rim after the 1926 eruption destroyed the original at the lake.
Eleven-tiered meru towers dedicated to Dewi Danu, goddess of the lake. The original temple stood at the lake; survived as a fragment of stone embedded in the new compound's wall.
Locals Say
Open all day for outside viewing; ceremonies most mornings 09:00–11:00. Free entry but sarong required (rentals at the gate).

Pinggan Village mist sunrise

A lesser-known caldera rim village 8km from Penelokan — clouds settle in the valley below at sunrise.
Local rim hamlet at 1,600m. The 'sea of clouds' phenomenon happens here on dry-season mornings — the valley below fills with mist that catches the sunrise gold.
Locals Say
Arrive 05:30 in dry season for the cloud-sea conditions. No tickets, no guides needed.
North rim · 8 km from Penelokan away
Best: May–September sunrises
