Indonesia Etiquette

Do
Carry cash from Sanur — only 4 working ATMs on Penida, often empty by 18:00.
Wear closed-toe shoes for the Kelingking viewpoint walk; the cliff staircase is loose volcanic scree.
Use a licensed driver-guide for the day-tour — IDR 700,000–900,000 for car + driver. Roads are narrow with steep grades.
Drink only sealed water — Penida has limited freshwater treatment, even at higher-end resorts.
Don't
Do not rent a scooter unless you have ridden steep mountain switchbacks before — Penida has the highest tourist injury rate in Bali province.
Do not climb past the safety rope at Kelingking viewpoint — fatal falls happen every season.
Do not free-dive with the manta rays at Manta Point — boats prioritise paying customers and reverse direction without warning.

Atuh Beach + Raja Lima viewpoint

An east-coast cove with five jagged sea-stacks ('Raja Lima' = five kings) — almost no day-trippers reach it.
Hour-long drive from Toyapakeh pier on bad road. Atuh Beach itself is a 200-step descent; the sea stacks are framed by the cliff at the top. Lonely-island feel even in peak season.
Locals Say
Day-trippers can't reach Atuh in a single day — only accessible by overnight stay. Combine with Diamond Beach (next bay over) for a half-day east-coast pair.
Far east coast · 1.5 hr drive from Toyapakeh pier away
Best: May–September mornings

Goa Giri Putri cave temple

A 262-step ascent leading into a cave temple that locals say can hold 5,000 worshippers.
Limestone cave on the north coast with a tiny entrance (1m high) that opens into a 270m-long chamber. Active Hindu temple — daily ceremonies; one of Penida's most important pilgrimage sites.
Locals Say
Sarong required; rentals at the entrance. Climb is steep but rewarded with cool cave air. IDR 25,000 donation.

Tembeling Forest natural pools

A pair of cliff-face natural pools at the end of a 30-min jungle trail — drinkable spring water, locals only.
South-coast forest with a freshwater stream cascading into two pools. Used by Penida villagers for daily bathing. Far from the day-trip route, so almost no tour groups.
Locals Say
Hire a local moto-taxi from Penida Resort (IDR 100,000 RT). Pack a swimsuit; locals will share the pool but expect respect.

Best: Daily mornings

Banah Cliff sunset

A 200m natural arch in the southwest cliffs — sunsets here have almost no other tourists.
Cliff lookout 1km from Banah Beach with a sea-eroded natural arch. Hard to find without local directions, which is exactly why it stays empty.
Locals Say
Driver needs offline GPS coordinates: -8.7891, 115.4500. Bring head-torch for the drive back.
Southwest cliff · 1 hr from Toyapakeh pier away
Best: 16:30–18:30
