Culture

Indonesia Etiquette

Do
Wear a sarong + sash at the inner temple approach — rentals at the entry, IDR 10,000–20,000.
Walk to the temple base at low tide for the holy-water blessing from the resident temple priest (donation IDR 20,000).
Photograph the temple from the south clifftop walk (Pura Batu Bolong) for a less-crowded frame.
Arrive 16:30 — most tour buses arrive 17:00, by which time the front rocks are full.
Don't
Do not walk on the temple's outer rocks at high tide — waves regularly knock visitors over and there have been drownings.
Do not enter the inner shrine — non-Hindu visitors are barred, monitored by the temple's pecalang community police.
Do not feed the holy sea snakes in the rock caves — the priest will demand a 'blessing fee' that's actually a scam.

Pura Batu Bolong clifftop

The sister sea-temple 200m south of Tanah Lot — almost no tour buses, framed view back to the main temple.
Smaller sea-temple on a natural rock arch ('batu bolong' = pierced rock). Same 16th-century origin as Tanah Lot, built by the priest Dang Hyang Nirartha; the walk between the two temples is the photogenic part of the visit.
Locals Say
Walk the cliff path immediately after the Tanah Lot blessing — most coach groups skip it. Best frame at 17:30 with main temple silhouetted in the distance.

Locals Say
Combine with Tanah Lot sunset — arrive 15:00, surf or swim for an hour, then drive south for the temple at 17:00.
