Tip. Golden Temple visits are best at dawn when the reflection on the sarovar is clearest. Winter mornings (Dec–Jan) have dense fog — flights often delayed.

Amritsar Etiquette
Do
Cover your head with a scarf or bandana before entering the Golden Temple complex — free head coverings are available at the entrance
Wash your feet in the shallow pool before stepping onto the marble parkarma (walkway) around the sarovar
Accept langar (community kitchen) prasad with both hands — it is considered sacred food and should not be wasted
Visit the Wagah Border ceremony early (by 3 PM in summer) to get good seats — Indian side fills up fast
Try authentic Amritsari kulcha at Kesar Da Dhaba or Bharawan Da Dhaba in the old city
Don't
Do not carry tobacco, cigarettes, or alcohol inside the Golden Temple complex — it is strictly prohibited
Do not point your feet toward the Guru Granth Sahib or any sacred text inside a gurudwara
Do not wear leather items (belts, bags) inside the Golden Temple premises
Do not take photographs inside the inner sanctum (Harmandir Sahib) where the Guru Granth Sahib is placed
Do not bargain aggressively at Hall Bazaar for religious items — it is considered disrespectful

Pul Kanjri
“A Maharaja's forgotten pleasure garden on the Grand Trunk Road”
Built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh for his favorite queen, this crumbling 19th-century rest stop features ornate frescoes, a baradari pavilion, and a still-functional step well. Hardly any tourists visit despite it being an ASI-protected site. The remaining murals show Sikh court life in vivid detail.
Locals Say
“Combine it with a stop at the Wagah Border — Pul Kanjri is just 4 km before Wagah on the same road, so visit on your way to the ceremony”
28 km from Amritsar city center (on Wagah road) away
Best: October to March (pleasant weather for open-air ruins)
