Cold but 40% cheaper, baths are steamy
Actually. Europe's best thermal bath city charges the same entry fee year-round. But the ruin bars mark up 40% when summer backpackers arrive.

Tip. Budapest's thermal baths are magical in winter — steam rising off 38°C pools while snow falls. Summers are hot and packed. Shoulder months (May, Sep) are the sweet spot.
Movie Quote

You see, there are still faint glimmers of civilization left in this barbaric slaughterhouse that was once known as humanity.

Budapest Etiquette

Do
Learn a few Hungarian words — locals deeply appreciate even a simple 'Köszönöm' (thank you)
Remove shoes when entering a Hungarian home; hosts will usually offer slippers
Toast with wine or soft drinks, look people in the eye, and say 'Egészségedre' (cheers)
Try thermal baths — they are central to Budapest culture; bring flip-flops and a towel
Validate your public transport ticket before boarding; inspectors are frequent and fines are steep
Don't
Don't clink beer glasses — Hungarians have a tradition of not clinking beer mugs (tied to 1848 history)
Don't assume everyone speaks English; outside the tourist centre, Hungarian is dominant
Don't skip tipping at restaurants — unlike some European countries, 10–15% is expected
Don't wear swimsuits in thermal baths that require bathing caps or specific attire — check rules first
Don't confuse Hungary with being part of a Slavic country; Hungarians are proud of their unique Magyar heritage

Szimpla Kert Farmers' Market

Sunday mornings at the ruin bar before the party crowd arrives
Szimpla Kert is famous as Budapest's original ruin bar, but every Sunday morning from 9 AM to 2 PM it transforms into an organic farmers' market. Local producers sell artisan cheeses, fresh bread, homemade jams, and Hungarian wines. Live folk music plays in the courtyard while families browse — a completely different vibe from the rowdy nightlife scene.
Locals Say
Arrive by 10 AM for the best produce selection and grab a freshly made lángos from the courtyard stall before the queue builds up.
0.5 km from Deák Ferenc tér (city centre) away
Best: Sunday mornings, 9 AM–12 PM (market runs until 2 PM but gets crowded)
