40°C on exposed granite — don't
Actually. The ruins survived 500 years. Your enthusiasm won't survive the April heat. November to February or don't bother.

Ruins turn lush green
Tip. The boulderscape looks incredible at sunrise and sunset. Midday in any month is brutal — these are exposed granite ruins with zero shade. November–February only.

Hampi Etiquette
Do
Remove shoes before entering all temple complexes — Virupaksha Temple, Vittala Temple, and smaller shrines alike
Dress conservatively (cover knees and shoulders) as Hampi is an active pilgrimage site, especially Virupaksha Temple
Rent a bicycle or moped from Hampi Bazaar to explore the ruins — the site spreads over 26 sq km
Cross the Tungabhadra by coracle (round boat) to reach the quieter hippie island side for cafes and bouldering
Attend the evening aarti at Virupaksha Temple around 6:30 PM — the ceremony with Lakshmi the elephant is memorable
Don't
Do not climb on or sit atop the ancient ruins and sculptures — they are UNESCO-protected and fragile
Do not consume alcohol or non-vegetarian food on the temple side (south bank) — Hampi Bazaar side is a sacred zone
Do not use flash photography inside temple sanctums — it damages ancient murals and carvings
Do not swim in the Tungabhadra at unmarked spots — strong undercurrents have caused drownings
Do not litter the boulder landscapes — Hampi has limited waste management and the site is ecologically fragile

Anegundi Village & Pampa Sarovar
“The mythical birthplace of Hanuman, untouched by tour buses”
Across the river from Hampi's main ruins, Anegundi is believed to be the ancient Kishkindha kingdom from the Ramayana. The village has prehistoric cave paintings at Onake Kindi, the sacred Pampa Sarovar lake surrounded by banana groves, and crumbling fortifications older than Hampi itself. It sees a fraction of Hampi's visitor traffic.
Locals Say
“Ask for Rama at Uramma Heritage Homes — he leads dawn treks up Anjanadri Hill (Hanuman's birthplace) with stories that no guidebook covers. Start by 5:30 AM to avoid the heat.”
5 km from Hampi Bazaar (coracle + walk) away
Best: October to February (cool, dry mornings for climbing)
