Actually. The desert doesn't negotiate. Visit October–March when the sand is walkable, or August–September when the Thar turns impossibly green after rare rain.

Tip. Desert night temperatures drop 15–20°C from daytime. A 42°C day becomes a 22°C night. Pack layers for camel safaris. The Desert Festival (Feb) is worth planning around.
Movie Quote

Sonar Kella! The golden fortress!

Screen Quote

Jaisalmer rises from the Thar Desert like a golden mirage — a fortress city that seems carved from sunlight itself.

Jaisalmer Etiquette

Do
Cover your head when entering Jain temples inside Jaisalmer Fort — scarves are available at the entrance
Remove all leather items (belts, bags, wallets) before entering Jain temples — leather is strictly prohibited
Ask permission before photographing Rajasthani women, especially in rural areas and desert camps
Try dal bati churma, ker sangri, and raw mango kadi — authentic Rajasthani desert cuisine
Support local artisans by purchasing directly from craftsmen in the fort — embroidery, mirror work, and sandstone carvings
Don't
Do not touch or lean against the intricately carved havelis (Patwon Ki Haveli, Salim Singh Ki Haveli) — the sandstone is soft and eroding
Do not drink tap water — Jaisalmer's water has high mineral content; stick to bottled or RO-filtered water
Do not litter in the Thar Desert during camel safaris — the fragile desert ecosystem takes decades to recover
Do not wander into the desert alone at night — distances are deceptive and phone signals are weak beyond Sam dunes
Do not accept unsolicited offers from touts near Gadi Sagar Lake for 'exclusive' boat rides — use the official ticket counter

Kuldhara Abandoned Village

A ghost village cursed to silence for 200 years
In 1825, all 1,500 residents of Kuldhara — Paliwal Brahmins — vanished overnight to escape the tyrannical prime minister Salim Singh. The eerily intact sandstone homes, streets, and temples remain exactly as they were left. Local legend says the villagers cursed the land so no one could ever settle here again. It's far more atmospheric than the tourist-heavy Sam dunes.
Locals Say
Visit at sunset when day-trippers have left — the abandoned streets in golden hour light are hauntingly photogenic. Bring a torch for the crumbling temple interiors.
18 km from Jaisalmer city center away
Best: October to February (desert winters; visit at sunset)
