Scotland Etiquette

Do
Call it Scotland, not England — Scots are fiercely proud of their distinct identity
Say 'cheers' for thanks — it works for almost every casual interaction
Queue politely — jumping the line is a serious social offence in the UK
Try a dram of single malt neat first — add a splash of water only after tasting
Tip 10–12% at sit-down restaurants if service isn't already included
Don't
Don't mock the accent or ask Scots to 'say something Scottish' — it wears thin fast
Don't call a kilt a 'skirt' — it's a centuries-old symbol of clan identity
Don't drink whisky with Coke in a whisky bar — order a blend for mixing
Don't discuss the 2014 independence referendum with strangers unless invited
Don't wander onto private estates in the Highlands during stalking season (Aug–Oct)
Tipping Guide

Dean Village

A 12th-century mill village five minutes from Princes Street
Hidden in a steep gorge carved by the Water of Leith, Dean Village is a pocket of stone cottages, old grain mills, and a cobbled riverside path the tour buses never find. Walk the Water of Leith Walkway east to Stockbridge for a farmers' market and Georgian streets, or west to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. The houses around Well Court look unchanged since 1886. Most visitors on the Royal Mile have no idea it exists.
Locals Say
Enter from Dean Bridge at sunset — the golden-hour light on the gorge walls turns the whole village into a film set.
1.2 km from Edinburgh Castle away
Best: Early morning or 6–8 PM (low crowds, best light)

Cold, dark 4pm, but castles are empty
Actually. The castles are older in November. The Highlands are more Highlands when there's frost on the heather. You're paying a daylight tax in August so you can Instagram Arthur's Seat at 9 PM instead of 4.
