Culture

Shillong Etiquette

Do
Greet elders with 'Kumno' — Khasi is the local language and using it shows respect for the indigenous matrilineal culture
Try jadoh (red rice with pork), tungrymbai (fermented soybean chutney), and doh-khlieh (pork salad with onions) at local eateries
Ask permission before entering sacred forests (Law Kyntang) — these groves are deeply sacred to the Khasi people and have strict rules
Support the local music scene — Shillong is called the 'Rock Capital of India' and has live gigs at Cafe Shillong and Cloud 9
Carry an umbrella always — Shillong receives sudden rain even in the dry season; locals call it 'Scotland of the East' for a reason
Don't
Do not pluck flowers or disturb anything in sacred groves — Khasi sacred forests are protected by community law for centuries
Do not make jokes about the matrilineal system (where children take the mother's surname) — it is a deep part of Khasi identity
Do not assume everyone speaks Hindi — Khasi and English are far more common; Hindi can be met with resistance
Do not litter at Umiam Lake, Elephant Falls, or Living Root Bridge sites — community-maintained sites depend on visitor respect
Do not bargain aggressively at Bara Bazaar (Lewduh) — prices are generally fair and the market is women-run as per Khasi tradition
Tipping Guide
Restaurant5-10% or round up; smaller joints don't expect tips
Taxi (shared Sumo/Tata)No tip expected for shared; ₹50-100 for private day hire
Trekking guide (Living Root Bridge)₹200-300 for the Nongriat trek
Homestay host₹100-200 as a gesture; better to bring a small gift
Hotel staff₹30-50 per service
Key Phrase
Kumno? Phi long ban?
'Kumno? Phi long ban?' — Khasi for 'Hello, how are you? Are you well?' — using Khasi pleasantly surprises locals and opens doors to warm hospitality

Mawphlang Sacred Forest

An ancient Khasi cathedral of moss, ferns, and forbidden silence
This 78-hectare sacred grove has been protected by Khasi law for centuries — not a single leaf, stone, or insect may be removed. Giant trees draped in orchids and moss create a cathedral-like canopy. The resident Lyngdoh (priest) clan still performs rituals here. It's an hour from Shillong but receives a fraction of Cherrapunji's tourist traffic.
Locals Say
Hire a local Khasi guide at the entrance (₹300 for group) — they explain the taboos, point out rare orchids, and share folklore. Without a guide, you'll miss the monoliths and sacrificial altar hidden deep inside.
