Movie Quote

It's not what happens in Bangkok, it's just after what happens in Bangkok.

I just feel like everyone tries to do everything, and it's impossible to do anything. So here I am, doing nothing.

Culture

Thailand Etiquette

Do
Greet with a 'wai' (palms together, slight bow) — the higher the hands, the more respect shown
Remove shoes before entering temples, homes, and many shops — look for a pile of shoes at the door
Dress modestly at temples: cover shoulders and knees; carry a sarong/scarf for quick cover-ups
Show deep respect for the Thai monarchy — the King is revered and lèse-majesté laws are strict
Use a spoon in your right hand for eating (fork in left to push food onto the spoon)
Don't
Don't touch anyone's head — the head is considered the most sacred part of the body in Thai culture
Don't point your feet at people, Buddha images, or temples — feet are the lowest and most disrespectful part
Don't raise your voice or show anger publicly — losing your temper causes 'loss of face' for everyone
Don't step on Thai currency (it bears the King's image) — this is illegal and deeply offensive
Don't touch monks if you are a woman — monks cannot have physical contact with women

Wat Arun at Dawn (by Boat)

Skip the daytime tourist crush — arrive by longtail boat at sunrise
Everyone visits Wat Arun, but almost nobody arrives at dawn by cross-river ferry from Tha Tien pier. At 6 AM, the temple's porcelain-encrusted spires catch the first golden light while the grounds are virtually empty. Monks chant inside, incense drifts through the air, and you can climb the central prang without queuing. The 4 THB ferry ride across the Chao Phraya is part of the magic.
Locals Say
After the temple, walk 5 minutes south to Arun Residence rooftop for a riverside breakfast with a view of Wat Arun that most photographers pay a fortune to get — a coffee and eggs cost 200 THB.
3 km from Khao San Road (10 min by taxi or 20 min walk + ferry) away
Best: Sunrise (6:00–6:30 AM) for golden light and empty grounds; temple opens at 8 AM for interior
