Actually. Istanbul straddles two continents but only one tourist season. Shoulder months — April, May, October — get you the same magic without the cruise-ship crowds.

Tip. Istanbul weather ≠ Cappadocia weather. Cappadocia hits 40°C in summer and -10°C in winter. Hot air balloons fly year-round but cancel for wind — spring/autumn has the best odds.
Movie Quote

Welcome to Istanbul. It has not always been this way, but now this is the last territory of the old Ottoman Empire.

Turkey Etiquette

Do
Accept tea (çay) when offered — refusing is considered impolite; it is a gesture of hospitality
Remove shoes when entering a Turkish home; look for slippers placed near the door for guests
Greet elders first and use respectful titles — age hierarchy matters in Turkish culture
Cover your shoulders and head (women) when visiting mosques; free coverings are usually available at the entrance
Haggle at bazaars — it's expected and part of the shopping culture; start at 50% of the asking price
Don't
Don't blow your nose loudly at the dinner table — leave the table if you need to
Don't point the sole of your foot at anyone — like many Asian cultures, feet are considered unclean
Don't make the 'OK' hand gesture (thumb and index circle) — it's considered vulgar in Turkey
Don't criticise Atatürk publicly — he is the deeply revered founder of modern Turkey
Don't assume Turkey is an Arab country — Turks have a distinct language, ethnicity, and cultural identity

Balat Neighbourhood

Istanbul's most colourful streets that Instagram hasn't fully discovered
Once a Greek, Jewish, and Armenian quarter on the Golden Horn, Balat is now a maze of pastel-painted Ottoman houses, antique shops, and hole-in-the-wall cafés. While Sultanahmet and Taksim draw millions, Balat remains mostly a local neighbourhood. The Chora Church (Kariye Museum) with its world-class Byzantine mosaics is here, along with the Iron Church — the only cast-iron church in the world.
Locals Say
Start at Fener Greek Patriarchate, walk uphill through Balat's colourful streets, stop at Naftalin K for coffee in an antique-stuffed courtyard, then end at Kariye Museum. Go on a weekday morning to avoid the few tour groups that have started discovering it.
5 km from Sultanahmet (15 min by taxi or bus 99A) away
Best: Weekday mornings; golden hour (late afternoon) for the best light on the colourful facades
